New Year IT Checklist: 10 Steps to Secure and Optimize Your Network

A new year is the perfect time to take stock of your technology environment and make sure everything is running securely and efficiently. Think of this as your annual technology wellness check, addressing the maintenance, security, and optimization tasks that keep your business running smoothly.

At Atlantic Computer Systems, we perform these assessments for our clients every year. Here is the complete checklist we recommend for 2026.

1. Update All Passwords and Review Access Controls

Start the year fresh by requiring password updates for all critical systems. Review who has access to what and remove permissions for former employees and contractors. Ensure multi-factor authentication is enabled on every system that supports it. This single step prevents a surprising number of security incidents.

2. Audit Your Software Licenses

Review every software subscription your business pays for. Identify unused licenses that can be cancelled, duplicate tools that can be consolidated, and opportunities to right-size your plans. Most businesses waste 20 to 30 percent of their software spending on unused or underutilized licenses.

3. Test Your Backups

Having backups is not enough. You need to verify they actually work. Perform a full test restore of critical data and systems. Confirm that your backup schedule covers all essential files and databases. Check that offsite and cloud backups are current and accessible. A backup you have never tested is a backup you cannot trust.

4. Review Your Cybersecurity Posture

Schedule a comprehensive security assessment. Update your antivirus and endpoint protection software. Review firewall rules and remove outdated exceptions. Check that all security patches are current. Evaluate whether your security tools are still adequate for the current threat landscape.

5. Inventory All Hardware

Create or update a complete inventory of all IT hardware including computers, servers, networking equipment, printers, and mobile devices. Note the age of each item and plan replacements for anything approaching end of life. Equipment older than 5 years is usually costing more in maintenance and lost productivity than replacement would cost.

6. Update Your Disaster Recovery Plan

Review your business continuity and disaster recovery plans. Update contact information, recovery procedures, and vendor details. If your business has changed significantly over the past year, your recovery plan needs to reflect those changes. Schedule a disaster recovery drill to test the plan.

7. Optimize Network Performance

Slow networks kill productivity. Review your internet bandwidth and upgrade if necessary. Check for network bottlenecks, aging switches, and WiFi dead zones. Ensure your network infrastructure can support your current and projected needs for the coming year.

8. Review Compliance Requirements

Regulations change frequently. Review the compliance requirements for your industry, including HIPAA, PCI DSS, SOC 2, or any industry-specific mandates. Ensure your security controls, documentation, and reporting meet current requirements. Non-compliance penalties are getting steeper every year.

9. Plan Employee Technology Training

Schedule security awareness training for all employees. Plan training on any new tools or systems being introduced. Identify skill gaps and create development plans. Well-trained employees are more productive and create fewer security risks.

10. Set Technology Goals for the Year

Work with your IT team or MSP to create a technology roadmap for 2026. Identify strategic projects, planned upgrades, and budget requirements. Align your technology investments with your business goals and growth plans.

Phishing Emails Are Hitting Healthcare Harder Than Ever

Phishing emails are hitting healthcare practices harder than ever, and they are getting more convincing every month. Attackers now use realistic messages that look like Microsoft alerts, patient documents, invoices, or secure voicemails. One click can expose your email system, patient communications, billing data, and internal files. For practice owners, the real risk is not just spam, it is downtime, compliance exposure, and costly recovery. Atlantic Computer Systems combines AI-driven detection with expert IT oversight to stop threats early and reduce liability before they become a breach.
